I wonder if the proliferation of the tip jars diminishes the desire to go to a grown up restaurant where there is table service? The whole point of the restaurant is to get service you don't get at Big Five. I wonder if this reduces the understanding of the service in restaurants and the elevated experience? I have no clue, but there is something that is being diluted. Because I am middle-aged and Catholic, so double whammy of guilt, I always tip. However, my kid does not, noting the difference in experiences. The young also hate AI slop. So I wonder if the coffee shop tip jars will disappear and tips will only appear where they traditionally arose. But in the end, this doesn't change the requirement: share your tips with the guys in the back and the bartenders making the drinks.
You know, I did not even approach the BOH aspect of tips and how crazy that is. The servers have been taking credit from the kitchen since day one- that is crazy, and also part of the "fiction", the arbitrary nature of these systems. I decided not to go there, because it seemed too technical, but you are right to point that out. Either pay the BOH waaay more, or they should be in the pool with proper representation.
As a cocktail waitress I always shared what I was told was the percentage to be given. I had no idea other waitresses were shorting the barbacks/bartenders until a bartender told me he appreciated my honesty. As for the system, I read that graduates from culinary schools preferred waiting tables because they made more money.
Dude the table of 6 that orders almost nothing…I had a 3-top last night. $37 for happy hour. Split 3 ways. Like dude, I’ll pay lol. One of you can’t cover the bill?!?!!
Also, when big tops split there’s always an idiot with cash.
We're all service industry workers man. I believe I first stumbled upon Laggy when he was, rightfully, berating some schmuck who thought tip was something of the past.
If you want to have an amazing live convo I suggest Judson. He's a heck of a guy with lots cool unique stories to share, and a talented multidisciplinary artist to boot.
