How can one defend against allegations from 20+ years ago? I’m all for protecting kids by tweaking the statute of limitations, but for adults, it’s a different story. Stretching it that far for grown-ups just doesn’t sit right with me.

Excellent analysis - as always.

I am very skeptical of these look back cases. Even if one agrees in this situation, pee in the pool never stays in one area but spreads. This is why I never liked hate speech enhancements. Why does a heinous crime against one group matter more than another? A mindset always came in as motive. Now hate speech is used as a weapon to censor - formally on the right and now firmly on the left at an exponential level.

Yes, hate the “hate” crimes statutes. Terrible laws and I have no doubt that they had their origins, if you trace it back, in the far-Left organizations that have been working for decades to impose their extreme positions on criminal justice reform. You see their wildest dreams being realized today with Progressive District Attorneys being elected in so many cities. Good old real crime being ignored and social-justice types of crime being advanced. They’ve got the academy and therefore the younger generations convinced that there really is such a thing as hate speech, and that it’s not Constitutionally protected.

I finished reading a book titled "Lost Rights" written in the 90s. Already we lost a lot of rights under the Bush administration. The patriot act accelerated it. I recall Julian Assange and the rape allegation. I didn't know much about him but the allegation seemed very shaky and then it was debunked. The problem is authoritarianism but I fully agree the progressive DAs have devastated and demoralized cities. Toothpaste needs to be locked up now for the majority but for the small percentage encouraged to be lawless.

Definitely, authoritarianism has advanced in the US. I'm embarrassed at my naivete after 9-11, back when I had a basic trust in our governmental institutions. It seems that I was wrong, way wrong.

I lost a good friend because I wouldn't march against the Iraq War. I was confused. I couldn't wrap my head around our government purposefully lying to get us into war. I wish my friend had discussed things with me instead of just cutting me off as some sort of war mongerer. I was against the invasion of Afghanistan only because I knew more about the history of the Soviet occupation. I thought it was immoral to invade a rag-tag country harboring a criminal. I recently read a book called "Enough Already" about our endless wars in the Middle-East. It is eye opening to say the least. There is an essay called War is a Racket by General Butler written in the 1930s. The racket has been going on for a long long time.

Career criminal prosecutor here. I abhor these laws that are erasing the statute of limitations for all of the reasons noted in this excellent article. We simply cannot allow the destructive power of the law to be unleashed without some strict boundaries and controls.

I could not be more of a foe of sexual assault; it may be the primary reason that I felt called to my career. I also experienced some sexual abuse as a child and as much as I wish I could go back in time and stop those people from having the opportunity to abuse me and any other child, I would not bring charges against them all these years later even if the statute of limitations did not bar prosecution.

Why a Statute of Limitations matters.

I can literally outline specific details about crimes I committed back in the 90's, crimes where there were multiple victims, and if a detective approached me about it I can simply respond "I made all of that up" and he couldn't do anything because the evidence actually doesn't exist and the facts are impossible to verify or debunk. If something like that couldn't be pursued under the law, where the criminal himself is the one sharing the facts, what chance is there to prove or disprove the case of an accuser or victim. That's exploitable if the only thing the law needs is a "story". The passage of time matters far more than most people realize.

Leave it to a democrat to fu€£ing acre things up. Statute of limitations is essential to living a normal life. Kathy Hokey with the criminals in the NY government passed an unconstitutional law (democrats can’t read the constitution) in order to “Get Trump”.
