My wife and I certainly did make a better generational representative with our over-achieving daughter. Perhaps ironically, it was by being more traditional in terms of strictness and punishments than her peers.
I have no doubt your approach had a positive effect on your daughter. There is a clear line between firm support and cruelty, which can be bifurcated into the opposites of excessive, abusive corporal punishment and neglectful lack of any parental oversight at all. Both extremes are damaging to children's abilities to balance confidence with societal limits as they mature, which is why so many seem incapable of finding adult success.
