Outstanding, Judson. I think many of us are attempting to solve the "thing" in our own way but because it's hard to define, solutions escape us. It's also equally hard to rally people to a cause that's ill defined, particularly when there's no apparent arrival even IF we could define it.

You're American; I'm not, nor do I live there. I still appreciate your superb piece, both in terms of content and writing style. I may criticise the US on this platform, but I've always maintained that there're many things about the US that makes it truly a great nation. It certainly needs genuinely patriotic people such as yourself, who can discern as well as be honest. There are others writers on WrongSpeak who continue to be divisive.

Yes, I did say “patriotic”. I really wish that your honesty, sincerity and hopefulness can spread further to others in your country. This piece deserves a wider readership, especially as your optimism isn’t a fantastical dreamy one but based on something everyone can grasp, i.e. your past history. I think you’ve used the word “spiritual’ absolutely appropriately.

It’s funny you talk about this nostalgia for the past. I’ve experienced the same where I live, where due to change, ordinary people crave for what was iconic about the past and try to recreate it. Now in retrospect after observing this for a few years, I’ve concluded that that type of thinking and action actually helps you accommodate to the present and re-create the future. Please do make an effort to try and get this piece out to as many people as you can.
