Freedom of expression has been one of the cornerstones of our republic. It allows us to have opinions and express ourselves without interference or censorship. One of the creative ways that many use the idea is by way of music. Music has been a powerful tool for centuries in expressing oneself, as music allows people to express messages of all sorts.
What caught my attention recently was the release of country music star Jason Aldean’s latest single “Try That in a Small Town”, which has received huge backlash and stirred up major controversy in a matter of days. The song actually came out in May, but the music video came out on July 14th of this year.
In the song, Aldean speaks about the small-town atmosphere and community of strong individuals looking out for one another. Another key message in the song is that acts of crime, lawlessness and anything threatening the safety of those who reside in small towns will not be tolerated, even going to the point of taking matters into their own hands, should it come down to that.
It did not take long for the song to be criticized by MSM outlets across the nation. Critics called the song a dog whistle for racism, pro-lynching, and sundown town rhetoric. As well as stating the song promotes violence and even goes the distance of the music video being “bloodthirsty”.

The music video showed clips of rallies, lootings, and riots as well as violence directed at law enforcement. Toward the end of the music video, it shows classic scenes of American culture such as a girl playing hopscotch, two men hunting, and farmers helping each other.
The song and music video were viewed as a response to the BLM movement back in 2020 along with the violence and looting that came with these protests, as the song was accused of targeting black people. Some even pointed out that the site where the music video was filmed in Columbia, TN was a courthouse where a lynching of a black man by the name of Henry Choate, took place in 1927, about 96 years ago. Country Music Television (CMT) pulled the music video from their channel following the backlash the song was receiving.
I am not a huge country fan, but I do have my favorites in that genre. I like to listen to Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum (known as Lady A today), and even Jason Aldean himself. To keep this honest and true, I listened to the song as well as watched the music video and concluded there was absolutely nothing problematic with this song or video.
The message I got from this song, is that while big cities across the US may have fallen victim to the violence we have seen for the past 3 years, in small towns the people will defend themselves and their rights from criminality and other threats that come their way.
Aldean even gave an explanation on Twitter denying the criticism and accusations against his new single. Ironically enough, despite the backlash, the single reached the #1 spot on iTunes even with the cancel culture demons lurking behind. If you think about it, those who are outraged most likely either a) listened to the song, b) watched the music video thoroughly, c) read the lyrics or d) all of the above.
I do salute Aldean for not bowing to the mob and not apologizing. I want to address a few problems I have with the reaction to Aldean’s single:
The MSM, leftist/progressive tactic of using race has been outdated for a long time. As a black man, I am extremely disgusted in how this was made into a race issue when it had absolutely nothing to do with race at the same time forcing the venomous narrative that Aldean was targeting blacks specifically, mind control at its highest pinnacle.
Black people are not the only race that commit crimes as crimes are committed by every race of people, the message in the song is clear. Regardless of skin color, if you are looking to cause trouble in that small time, chances are you will be dealt with accordingly.
On the surface, the left and progressives call it racism, but it is clear that they will stretch like Stretch Armstrong to attach anything to racism to fit their destructive agenda while at the same time gaslighting people into expressing fraudulent outrage. Thomas Sowell said that racism is like ketchup, and you can practically put in on anything, look no further as this is the perfect exhibit on his point.
As stated earlier, music has been an influential form of expression for a long time. I noticed that Freedom of Expression regarding music and lyrics is selective in today’s society. Jason Aldean is the enemy for expressing a song about small-town values and taking care of each other. He is labeled as racist and calls are mounting for the song to be cancelled.
However, the crux of rap and hip hop music talks about drugs, killing others (mainly black on black death), promiscuity, and other negative connotations (i.e., drill rap, “Poundtown”, “WAP”, etc.) there is zero to little outrage and concern regarding that. The selectivity of freedom of expression applies to only a select group and it’s sickening to even think that something like that exists.
Notice that while there was no mention of black people in the song and music video, if you look at the music video closely, it shows clips of whites committing the crimes, and despite that fact, the assumption still was made that the message was targeting blacks. So, in theory, who does that make the racist one? Think about it.
Something else to consider is the out-of-touch attitude of elites and even those that live in big cities who think they care about small-town USA, but in actuality, they only said something thanks to the song. While big cities are catching hell, small towns and residents want order and stability. Is that too much to ask for? Apparently so.
The Jason Aldean episode proves that the beast of woke cancel culture is still alive and kicking and unless you fall in line with the approved agenda and messages, you will be on the list waiting to be devoured. This is simply a tool to further divide Americans using race.
The nauseating thing is that even in 2023, many are still falling for these tactics. There are things of higher magnitude of importance than a song that has triggered the MSM to use their machine tactics to poison minds across the nation. Aldean’s song has actually united individuals as many are tired of the games being played.
Overall, it is time to stop looking at the pigment of our skin and instead look at character, willingness, integrity, and the love in our hearts. Love your neighbor regardless of who they are and where they come from whether it’s in a small town or a big city and look out for one another in a world that has gone cold.
For me, I will never allow race to get in the way. Regardless of who you are and where you come from, if you are a decent person then I consider you a brother and a sister and nothing will ever change that.
At the end of the day, as the classic saying goes, a house divided against itself cannot stand.
Jason Aldean And Woke Cancel Culture
Well said. Messages such as this need a wider audience.
Thank you. Spot on!
