We were blessed with the ability to survive on one income so my wife could stay at home full time. It was paycheck to paycheck, but worth the pressure that put on us. That lasted until the boys were 6 and 8 years old, when she picked up a part time job. That was in the early 'dads can parent too' era, and I was happy to take some of the burden to give her a break. We also had an awesome support team through our church. Couldn't be happier with the result.
Must be nice to be able to afford that! Lots of families don't have enough on a single income to do that. Grandparents or other family members who live nearby can be a great help if both parents work.
I didn't lose myself either. I loved it (most of the time) and cherish the memories now that my children are grown.

“The hand that rocks the cradle...”
My wife, too, stayed home to raise our three, now successful adult, kids. No job is more important.
