The Republican Party has long been known as the party of the rich old White man. But this has been slowly changing. Many Black and especially Brown people are beginning to throw their support to the GOP because of the far-left radical takeover of the Democratic Party. And Democrats are increasingly becoming the party of the elite.
In 2016 Donald Trump seemed to understand this and was able to galvanize support from the frustrated working class. Regardless of whether he can do it again in 2024, there’s no doubt the movement he helped create will continue even without his presence.
The problem seems to be that mainstream Republicans are still stuck in the old days of warmongering and low taxes. The majority of the public could care less about the war in Ukraine or lowering taxes. They want lower grocery bills, schools that actually educate, safe neighborhoods, orderly immigration, and better job opportunities. These are all policies Democrats seemingly no longer prioritize.
The Democratic platform of abortion on demand, transgenderism, defunding the police, sending massive amounts of money overseas, and implementing restrictive climate policies are not popular with average Americans.
Unfortunately, the GOP doesn't seem to be able to capitalize on this. They still believe pandering to wealthy elitists is their ticket to electoral victory, despite multiple losses. It's time for the GOP to recognize the party’s new calling as that of the working class and minority.
As the Democrats pivot to a far-left platform they are still enjoying legacy support from minorities. Many Black and Brown people continue to vote Democrat because of cultural reasons and fear-mongering from the mainstream media which assign baseless labels to Republicans like ‘racist’ and ‘fascist’. This is why despite Democratic policies being unpopular-they are still winning.
The GOP needs to make a huge play to shift demographics. They need to start courting minorities, women, and the working class in a BIG way.
We know that in some schools the majority of students are failing. In many of these areas, crime is astronomical, and often offenders are able to walk away from even violent crimes with light sentences. The GOP needs to devise strategies and policies that will focus on basic educational standards-not woke ideology and show how they can keep urban areas safe from police brutality and criminal insanity.
Women and many in the LGB community are disillusioned with the transgender movement. Pushing this bizarre pseudoscience onto the youngest of children and encouraging them to mutilate their bodies is an issue currently bringing long-time leftists over to the right. Many women will vote Republican solely because of this issue. The GOP needs to show how they will stem the advancement of this madness and how they will protect women, children, and parental rights.
Restrictive climate change policies, such as pushing for expensive electric cars and banning gas stoves impact those on the tightest budgets. The GOP should devise a plan that focuses on moving towards cleaner energy incrementally without pushing people further into poverty.
While making a play for more non-traditional Republican voters, the GOP must do two primary things:
First, they must push back on the racist and fascist narrative. Make Democrats describe what they mean by ‘racist’. The definition of a supremacist according to Merriam-Webster is “an advocate or adherent of the supremacy of one group: a person who believes that one group of people as identified by their shared race, ethnicity, sex, gender, or religion is inherently superior to other groups and should have control over those other groups”. When was the last time a conservative flexed this type of superiority? Or stated their Harvard education and financial success make them a higher authority? The long-standing stereotype of Republicans has been uneducated poor hicks-not the typical person espousing supremacy. Whereas the stereotypes for liberals have been uppity, white, and highly educated-a more likely candidate for this definition.
We need to also make progressives give their definition of ‘fascism’ and provide receipts as to how it applies to Republicans. Fascism can be defined as “a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition”. Yes, many conservatives are patriotic but where is the evidence for wanting centralized rule? Most conservatives want the opposite! It is progressives that are pushing for severe economic and social regimentation and forcible suppression-conservatives want the status quo. So again we must demand progressives explain how ordinary men and women fit that definition while defending themselves from a term that appears more suitable for themselves.
Second, they must begin reaching out and campaigning in urban areas. Even if they are likely to lose, they must begin to make inroads in Democratic strongholds. As we’ve seen from ruby red states like ID, UT, and MT starting to slowly develop a presence in enemy territory will eventually begin to pay dividends. Cities like Salt Lake City and Boise are beginning to elect radical liberal leaders right under the nose of a Republican majority. CO and AZ used to be red states as well and liberals have been able to slowly flip these states over time.
It may take patience but a concerted effort to recruit working-class and Black and Brown candidates to run and win in urban areas is vital not just for the GOP but those suffering from failing radical policies. A Republican candidate for mayor in Chicago may be unlikely now-but how long until the people are so dissatisfied with Democratic leadership that they are ready to try someone new? The GOP needs to be ready to provide that option.
If the GOP wishes to win in the next cycle (or ever again) and begin to push the ideological pendulum back toward sanity they must recognize their new place in society and adjust accordingly. The GOP was founded under the principles of freedom for all. They are the party of Abraham Lincoln-not corporate America! It's high time they remember that!
Demographics May Be Destiny-But Not The Destiny Democrats Planned
Well written article on the state of the Republican party vis-a-vis the Democrats. You laid out the major differences and opportunities that are there for the republican's taking. One I disagree with is the issue of taxes, I believe most people are against the constant over taxation, but the issue is seldom framed properly and wealthy people provide the liquid that makes a hard pill easier to swallow. Republicans fail on messaging for several reasons, the primary being they have little voice in the mainstream media. The secondary being that Republicans are mostly independent, self-reliant, those that believe in individual responsibility, this makes it much more difficult to form cohesion.
Without a doubt if the Republicans can't effectively bring their message and action to inner cities and poison pill Democrat urban strongholds they're doomed. The party also must find ways to infiltrate and educate young minds as those are Democrat strongholds do their overwhelming hold on primary and secondary education. Lots of work to do, but people like you and Adam are sounding the alarm. Keep up the racket, raise the din, use your social media skills to breakthrough the Democrat hum.
Good points, Rebecca. As much as Republicans dread all this Progressive "progress", they do have to learn to adapt with the times in order to keep up their message. It might be a bitter pill to swallow, but the alternative is frightening. ZL
